As of March 2019, more than 11,000 lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto by plaintiffs who have developed cancers including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia, and b-cell lymphoma after long-term exposure to the weed killer. Roundup is one of the most popular and widely used herbicides in the world. Monsanto was acquired by Bayer in June 2018. Monsanto still claims that glyphosate, Roundup’s active ingredient, is safe but in 2015 the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report stating that it causes DNA and chromosomal damage in human cells and is probably carcinogenic to humans.

In August 2018 a San Francisco jury awarded $289 million to Dewayne Johnson who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after years of using Roundup as a school groundskeeper. His award was reduced to $78 million, by a San Francisco Superior Court Judge, on appeal.
In March 2019, a San Francisco jury awarded $80 million to Edwin Hardeman. The trial took place in two phases. During the first phase the jury found that Roundup exposure was the cause of his cancer, a step that was required before moving on to phase two to determine liability and damages. The two-phase process was requested by Bayer and gave them the advantage of limiting the types of evidence plaintiffs were allowed to present against them in the first phase. But even with those limitations, the jury found in favor of the plaintiffs.
