Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

NAS is opioid withdrawal in a newborn. A baby that is exposed to opioids in the womb, suffers withdrawal symptoms and complications after delivery and withdrawal of the drug. NAS is painful for your baby and can be life-threatening. Symptoms of opioid withdrawal in newborns can include:

  • Seizures
  • Trembling
  • Hyperactive reflexes
  • Tight muscle tone
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty eating
  • Dehydration
  • Breathing problems
  • Stuffy nose or sneezing
  • Excessive yawning
  • Excessive crying
  • High-pitched crying
  • Sleep problems
  • Fever or unstable temperature
  • Sweating or blotchy skin

Babies with NAS require treatment in a newborn intensive care unit (NICU) with very close monitoring and careful treatment during the grueling process of weaning off of opioids. Consequences of NAS can include:

  • Developmental delays
  • Undeveloped liver
  • Behavioral problems
